When fragility meets inner strength, the underlying strength that holds together the outer structure , perception happens.

When I look at all the lines that form between the skeleton structure of other lines I see

-lines that support

-lines that connect

-lines that intersect

-lines that reach out

-lines that hang loose

-lines that dissolve

Looking is such a game , a game of focused attention, of what is noticed, what is left unseen whether consciously or subconsciously certain filters are applied that determine one's field of vision .

noticing::: stillness precedes looking closer , a held breath is often the only way to capture tiny details without blur, blurring the edges , blurring the edges of perception , to clear and focus the edges of perception a still breath paves the way.

Looking closely , at the tiny detail that makes up my surrounding life opens up this world of mystery that draws me into myself like
nothing else can. I am left to marvel at the building blocks of this universe that creates strands of connections for me to discover.

There are underlying rhythms to the passage of perceived time that I have come to honor without needing to define them any longer. I know they are there because I feel the strands that connect them , from one rhythm to the next , certain strands of memory are retained that carry information over to the next familiar motion .

noticing : my enjoyment of the word " strand

The first warm afternoon in Spring, March beckoning me to lie on warmed up paving stones and look closely.
I feel myself being wheeled into a world that speaks to my inner self.... For now it am not questioning the why or the how. But simply am taking deep time to look, look closely , deeply and intuitively respond with marks, my lines, my inner strands

The remnant lines of a skeleton leaf structure hint at one both at fragility yet also opening .... Decay yet opening to light
the old slowly deteriorating yet leaving behind a solid structure of supportive strands , there long enough until new avenues have been seen, opened into and finally dissolved barriers allow access to the new...

noticing : the tube carries at its center a solid line.... The line expands itself outward to create 3 dimensional form perceivable in both time and space

  • what intrigues me is the word circular ::: as explored yesterday it is described as " shaped like or NEARLY like a circle "
  • I started to ponder at what point exactly something becomes or remains circular ... and it which point does it move over to oval or egg shape?
  • Does our perception have a certain set of pre-conceived boundaries that the brain stores and applies to visual processing everytime an object is AKIN to a set " RULE" of description?
  • Does that mean we always have to have  an " OVAL" or " EGG" or " CIRCLE" experience FIRST before our brain can store that set of information or are we MADE with that information already contained within us?

  • Whilst walking on the beach today I noticed that I " sorted " the stones in my head not by circle, or oval or egg but they registered first as ROUND-SMOOTING- SOFT ...
  • the resonance came from  the shape that presented itself in the size that would be best fitting into the palm of my hand
  • I notice that when I have a set " theme" or " focus" in my mind whilst walking on the beach my brain has the ability to filter and home in on items that fit my current interest, ignoring those that do not seem to fit the category

  • Without the focus I often get over stimulated when faced with lots and lots of potential avenues of interest, ending up exhausted by so many beautiful choices
  • Choosing to limit my field of perception is proving to be a fruitful respite :-)

    •  On our walk today I came across these tree logs that have been seasoning away and are now playing host to a range of fungi that have grown themselves in a circular fashion around the edges of the tree ring

    • Observing the linear remnants of the " design formation" focusing on the simple edge line quality of the shapes that present each other in relation

    • it is intriguing to notice that the fungus seems to prefer the outer perimeter of the tree trunk and arranges itself in a circular manner itself clinging to the wood as an outline for its growth

    • continuing on from yesterday and the arrangements of sets I investigate the different number of sets to see what resonates and what does not

    • a SET OF 9 ...arranged in a square of 3 rows by 3 rows seems still pleasing , re-inforcing a feeling of continuation, stability, sustainability , centering, steadfastness, assured-ness, harmony, balance, origin

    • a SET OF 3 ..in a row makes me feel like a continous line as well as a stable pattern . It feels pleasing, simple yet strong and determined, yielding, open-ended yet not easily persuaded to deviate

    • SET OF 4 circles makes me downright uncomfortable. I have never been drawn to even numbers and this makes me feel restricted, pre-determined, cold, screaming out " I told you so" . I am not quite sure where these notions are coming from but that is what arises within and I am simply noticing it

    • SET OF 6 Circles is a funny one, in that is gives me a mixed sort of feeling  . It is almost like I want to like it, after all it is 3 and not only once but twice ... but it leaves me " hanging" like it is unfinished, still in motion heading for its destination . It is half-hearted , not committed, and talks of a pile of unfinished projects long forgotten

    Favourites Circle Set Designs

    • this is interesting to me , because I do not usually like the circle shapes as such , yet when the circle is handdrawn and REPEATED ...in a set or formation I find they resonate a different kind of energy then when they are drawn with a compass , perfect circles as it were

    • NOTICING: Although I do like irregular unpredictable shape there is something about SETS that is appealing, sets of handdrawn circles , particularly when arranged in the formation of
      9  - 3x3

    • There seems to be a kind of measured force that meets an unmeasured one - creating a harmonious balance for me

    • So I have a handdrawn/non-perfect circle and it is filled with lines representing the internal dynamic of both rotation in a circle and a cross counter force that will prevent the circle from becoming 3 dimensional

    • I had a play of combining both handdrawn with compass drawn circles and a little watercolor effect.
    • When BOTH types of circles appear on the same piece of art, for me , they create HARMONY again
    • If I ONLY  use compass drawn circles , it becomes a stagnant, constricted energy
    • If I ONLYuse handdrawn circles, the energy is abundant and playful

    Experimenting with Hand Stitching Circles

    • choosing form my favourite types of circles I took some hand-dyed thread on added circle designs to the previously stitched vessel that resulted out of the roadside crack drawings from earlier in this study

    • I explored how far I could take a circular stitch rotation before it started to lift into 3-D space... the outer circle rings were fine, the tighter it got toward the center the more the tendency to lift into 3-dimensional space emerged .I stopped at that level

    •  when adding a sidewards motion stitch to fill the circle I decided to just pre-draw the circle with a white watercolor pencil to give me an idea of its outline and omit the actual circle line around the perimeter but just stitch the " filled circle" as it were .

    •  I liked the way that shape made me feel, like it suggested , hinted at the circle without containing it ..I would like to explore that a little bit more , making circles or circle forms without the perimeter or circumference emphasized

    The Rest

    • Extension beyond boundaries , there seems to be a sort of easy/unease feeling, like the circle is containing and somehow " leaking when a force extends past its boundaries .
    • Equally though it is a freeing sort of feeling, like there are no boundaries however tight the circle edge might appear there is always a force that can go beyond ..
    • These circle sets create a feeling of instability
