  •  On our walk today I came across these tree logs that have been seasoning away and are now playing host to a range of fungi that have grown themselves in a circular fashion around the edges of the tree ring

  • Circular
  • Circle
  • Circuit
  • Circling

  • Observing the linear remnants of the " design formation" focusing on the simple edge line quality of the shapes that present each other in relation

  • it is intriguing to notice that the fungus seems to prefer the outer perimeter of the tree trunk and arranges itself in a circular manner itself clinging to the wood as an outline for its growth

  • continuing on from yesterday and the arrangements of sets I investigate the different number of sets to see what resonates and what does not

  • a SET OF 9 ...arranged in a square of 3 rows by 3 rows seems still pleasing , re-inforcing a feeling of continuation, stability, sustainability , centering, steadfastness, assured-ness, harmony, balance, origin

  • a SET OF 3 ..in a row makes me feel like a continous line as well as a stable pattern . It feels pleasing, simple yet strong and determined, yielding, open-ended yet not easily persuaded to deviate

  • SET OF 4 circles makes me downright uncomfortable. I have never been drawn to even numbers and this makes me feel restricted, pre-determined, cold, screaming out " I told you so" . I am not quite sure where these notions are coming from but that is what arises within and I am simply noticing it

  • SET OF 6 Circles is a funny one, in that is gives me a mixed sort of feeling  . It is almost like I want to like it, after all it is 3 and not only once but twice ... but it leaves me " hanging" like it is unfinished, still in motion heading for its destination . It is half-hearted , not committed, and talks of a pile of unfinished projects long forgotten

Favourites Circle Set Designs

  • this is interesting to me , because I do not usually like the circle shapes as such , yet when the circle is handdrawn and REPEATED ...in a set or formation I find they resonate a different kind of energy then when they are drawn with a compass , perfect circles as it were

  • NOTICING: Although I do like irregular unpredictable shape there is something about SETS that is appealing, sets of handdrawn circles , particularly when arranged in the formation of
    9  - 3x3

  • There seems to be a kind of measured force that meets an unmeasured one - creating a harmonious balance for me

  • So I have a handdrawn/non-perfect circle and it is filled with lines representing the internal dynamic of both rotation in a circle and a cross counter force that will prevent the circle from becoming 3 dimensional

  • I had a play of combining both handdrawn with compass drawn circles and a little watercolor effect.
  • When BOTH types of circles appear on the same piece of art, for me , they create HARMONY again
  • If I ONLY  use compass drawn circles , it becomes a stagnant, constricted energy
  • If I ONLYuse handdrawn circles, the energy is abundant and playful

Experimenting with Hand Stitching Circles

  • choosing form my favourite types of circles I took some hand-dyed thread on added circle designs to the previously stitched vessel that resulted out of the roadside crack drawings from earlier in this study

  • I explored how far I could take a circular stitch rotation before it started to lift into 3-D space... the outer circle rings were fine, the tighter it got toward the center the more the tendency to lift into 3-dimensional space emerged .I stopped at that level

  •  when adding a sidewards motion stitch to fill the circle I decided to just pre-draw the circle with a white watercolor pencil to give me an idea of its outline and omit the actual circle line around the perimeter but just stitch the " filled circle" as it were .

  •  I liked the way that shape made me feel, like it suggested , hinted at the circle without containing it ..I would like to explore that a little bit more , making circles or circle forms without the perimeter or circumference emphasized

The Rest

  • Extension beyond boundaries , there seems to be a sort of easy/unease feeling, like the circle is containing and somehow " leaking when a force extends past its boundaries .
  • Equally though it is a freeing sort of feeling, like there are no boundaries however tight the circle edge might appear there is always a force that can go beyond ..
  • These circle sets create a feeling of instability

No:::34 Sketchbook - Monad - Circle Symbology - The Circle Representing Number Symbol 1 - @ ralire.milliande.com The Ralire Study

  • Circle Symbology seems to be a vast field of study in and of itself, wherever I look and dig a little deeper there are circles, literally it is hard to escape the circular form in daily life and perception
  • Circles have been associated with a variety of concepts over the ages
  • Infinity
  • Revolution
  • Womb
  • Nurturing
  • Unity
  • Focus
  • Wholeness
  • Inclusion
  • Mobility
  • I wondered if I simply heard that word, that concept what circle imagery would arise within me ..onto my

  • Taking a simple symbol from yesterdays explorations I set out to stitch a sample beginning with a piece of hand-dyed cloth that had been tie died to reveal a circular resist shape. I thought about the dot being considered the center of the circle ..the origin ..the ZERO as it were and proceeded to stitch applique one in the middle

  • as I continued with small kantha stitches in ever increasing circles, adding tiny dot stitches around the edges the main circle kept " raising itself" literally ..it is almost impossible to keep it flat as it were..the tendency , the force to extend itself outward is almost not containable.

  • This had me wondering as to the why of this phenomena, I am sure with enough knowledge of physics there will be some " surface tension" or motion explanation for it, but for now I am wondering just why that is so ...it is intriquing me

  • Even more interesting, the more I merely wanted to create a circle the more it turned into a " breast shape" .. I am not kidding, if I would have set out to create a breast I could not have not a better job ...judge for yourself ;-)

No:::34 Sketchbook - Monad - Circle Symbology - Hand Stitched The Circle Representing Number Symbol 1 - @ ralire.milliande.com The Ralire Study

  • So here I am with this rogue circle that seems to want to become 3-dimensional by the simple act of rotation , ROTATION ... a rotating circle ... a Rotating number One

  • So the center is the point of origin - expanding outwards

  • Origin is a point, a dot, breathing into the void - expanding in all directions

  • At the immediate circumference there will be an initially perceived " end"
    yet is continues to extend

  • And the question arises , if one is represented by a circle, what shape is ZERO?

  • Zero is often associated with the infinity symbol but somehow it feels sticky to me ...

  • If ONE pertains to ONE THING ..and ZERO pertains to NOTHING , why would we need NOTHING to make 10, 100, 1000000000 ... so nothing increases something ...how odd a thought
  • so NOTHING = Everything = INFINITY = NOTHING

  • contemplating that with my study buddy T.P she came up with the reminder of the phrase
" You got zero potential" that in fact in this context can be taken to mean you contain ALL the possible potential within you ....

  • Wordplay ... Number Play its a world of communicative interpretation

No:::33 Sketchbook - Monad- December 21 2013 - The Ralire Study

  • Following on from yesterdays attempt to draw a " perfect circle " I liked the way the irregular circles looked on the page

  • so I thought about adding another circular shape on top, bolder, demanding more space and it went on to play with a whole array of circle permutations

  • noticing: that I like the irregular shape of a circle , with the center indicated but not neccessarily perfectly centric

  • noticing: that there is a definite narrative to particular arrangements , some feel solid, some loose, some hint at a next stage, some talk of things accomplished

  • noticing: the point in the center marks the origin and I am highly drawn to circles that have a dot in the center , I like the way they make me feel and intuitively am drawn to looked at the center when a circle presents with a dot . Even if the dot is not in the middle my mind still places it in the middle
  • I bought a compass today and shall be exploring " perfect circles" soon

  •  as part of the transpersonal research format intuitive responses are recorded to provide insides into particular thought patterns that arise from within.
  • These images I created quite naturally in a relatively short space of time without much thinking. Just arising permutations of circle placements .
  • Now I feel like words , narrative descriptions arise from the emotion which each picture causes ..I will try and formulate them by paying attention to the first word string that pops into my conscious mind when I reflect upon the image
