Linear Remnants Studies in Line Abstraction -Drawing for Textiles  The Ralire Study

  • As we took a little evening walk I came across several pieces of manmade string wrapped around a barbed wire fence, discarded, windswept they had found their way into various entanglements along the lines.
  • Human marking Human ( HmH) a human made strong string and a human made barbed wire fence ... the lines that were created were accidental, arrived in this configuration by chance caught in the wind literally
  • and there I noticed it again, that resonance, my eye catching lines that are random, appearing out of place yet arriving just as if I meant to notice .. no-one created this arrangement with the intent of forming lines, they simply were a by product of another action .. yet the compositions intrigue me, something internally resonated and I am compelled to take a picture
  • having framed the initial shot , I tend reduced it to a 2 tone black and white image to further remove distracting from the simplicity of the line formation
  • As I am exploring active ways of conscious yet random markmaking I included an element of chance by letting a computer program choose the 4 squared frames rather than " finding them myself".  I then use what presents itself to me, to investigate the linear compositions further
  • there is a certain quality to the representational line in the first abstraction and another different sensibility in the symbolic abstraction underneath
  • The essence of the line remains the same yet the viewpoints change drastically

  • We passed one of my favourite roadside cracks which never fails to make me smile and look for resonance , it has been here for years
  • I chose a couple of angles to photograph it from and play with Line Abstraction
  • After the initial squared lines were abstracted it intuitively felt right to connect them again by extending the lines beyond their boundaries letting them find some natural partner as it were
  • Because there was no obvious comparison to an Image of origin due to the random aspect of the square selection my mind was free to simply let the line dance over to a free one and see what kind of shapes developed when lines connected
  • There is nothing t represent, nothing to depict just a conscious watching as to what arises
  • When the shape was still it invited me to fill it with " my 3 Set Stitch Pattern" from Breathstay 1
  • a feeling of continuation arises, a claiming of my symbology of sorts ..and it sits well with me

  • Finally all 4 sets of rectangles were added underneath each other and filled with my  " 3 Set Stitch Patterns"
  • the first two rows arranged in such a way that they almost spilled out of the edges, the white shapes being pushed forward as if demanding to be centerfocus ... when I let the lines spill and erased the connecting lines inbetween rivers of white seem the emerge
  • It has a kind of orientation map sort of feel -- I like the ... a way to orient myself, ground this research , give it linear life :)

  • pondering on visual responses to my neighbours sound activities  I feel I have entered Breathstay 2 - with the concept of linear frequencies resonating strongly .. sound as a line ..a wave..and extension forward

  • listenting intensely this morning failed to bring up any noises of said neighbour .. only a faint crash of a door indicating he has left home ... ahhh silence
  • filled however with a variety of bird chatter , songs of up s and downs and to's and fro's , overlying, underpinning yet always linear ..little bursts forward , outward, upward
  • I spent 3 sets of 15 minutes listening out .. focussing only on the bird song and nothing else that may have penetrated into my awareness
  • There were sounds I recognised, bird songs that replied to each other, little chitters and chatters, sounds that I got surprised by and sounds that were somehow harmonious to me
  • I identified 2 that I liked a lot .. I dubbed them " Chatterbird"  and " Melodious Bird "
  • I am not a birdwatcher or know much about bird song, but somehow I like it that way .. they remain new, fresh , unattached to any emotionally perceived ideas .. and so I ponder

  • These patterns look like ancient script to me , I can " read" them as it were and it goes something like this : " Bird who always screeches loudly in threes ::: Bird that pitches high but finishes low ::: Bird that starts in sets of 3 and finishes on harmonious twirl ::: Bird that sings in waves of current ::: Bird that sharply overshadows everyone ::: Bird that whispers furiously etc
  • These sounds are uttered , sang loudly, hummed quietly yet all leave a linear residue in my mind
  • Linear Residue = Linear Remnant ... just a hint of what sound played, a sense of the sequence, yet the visual line gives a distinct impression of the quality, the nature of that sound to me even if I can remember or sing it fully recalled
  • A thought -- If I chose a favourite line ...lets say " Melodic Bird" and repeat it how would it differ if I hum the sound inside my head while I draw it repeatedly compared to reciting the timestable inside my head whilst drawing it ... let see

  • there is a definite harmonious feeling to the pattern I created when humming the sound , softer lines , swung freely, kind of dancing almost
  • I noticed that I chose to go vertical lines rather than horizontal lines ..I dont know why but the sounds seem to present themselves that way
  • I will attempt to draw them horizontally maybe to see whether it has a different quality to the lines, here the sounds somehow seem stacked rather than lined up ... a motion that goes up and down at the same time rather than progressively along for me

  • On my evening walk I managed to record one of the bird songs I had earlier that day ...

  • as well as one of the helicopters returning to base

  • if you care to participate in this study I would love to see how you would interpret each of these songs using only drawn line

--------------

There is peculiar tendency for noise to penetrate , force one to pay attention regardless of whether it is desired or not

This morning the noise outside was piercing to my ears ..singular unexpected noises seem to standout against the usual sound of nature, wind and the odd car passing by on their morning drive

It started with our neighbour , hammering followed by drilling on metal ... A sound that I simply cannot bear ... We live quite rurally but said neighbour has built a workmanship barn in his garden and proceeds to repair cars in there daily ...

I tried earplugs, pillows, industrial strength ear defenders ..but it still disturbs my equilibrium .

What surprised me was the following thought:

----------

Why do I like unpredictable patterns and lines but totally dislike unexpected sounds ?

This morning I chose to listen deeper , slower, with a linear intensity as it were... what kind of lines where these noises making ? I had only a line what would that noise look like ?

Welcome to 15 min of my morning ...

What started of with hammering was followed by drilling, some bird chatter , 2 dog conversations , a and no less than 7 helicopters ... Hmmm

I showed babe the lines without telling her what they were , she said " some kind of frequencies"

Linear Frequencies ::: now what if sound was made of of wave lines... Lines that wave , lines that extend themselves , linear sound barriers , Linear fragments of sound ...

Interesting ...

I followed the above by 10 minutes of one breath drawing to center  myself again... I do find that certain lines have a calming, centering ability for me ...

The Ralire Study - Breath Stay 1 on Euler Formula and Soap Bubble Laws

Naturally occurring patterns and my investigation into all the different kinds available led me to a study by Cyril Stanley Smith called " The Search for Structures " ... Structure ..the word resonated and I followed my intuition to investigate further .

Glancing at the study 3 particular passages in the text stood out for me

" ... makes them join each other always in groups of THREE at an angle of 120 degrees, just like soap bubbles

" Two dimensional interfaces are necessary to define the separate indentity of things in THREE dimensions "

" It is pleasing in appearance because the eye senses this interplay between irregularity and regularity "

" ... makes them join each other always in groups of three at an angle of 120 degrees, just like soap bubbles  "

Taking a " seemingly" randomly occurring pattern like the formation of soap bubbles or foam in the bathtub at the end of the day, I am intrigued to learn that there maybe a pattern that is underlying all the various bubble formations. It is to be understood that these shapes form in sets of three and almost always at an angle of 120 degrees.

There are 2 approaches to this inquiry, one would be to follow the mathematical logic whilst the other one is to stay within a path of intuitive inquiry leading toward a creative response. I will follow the latter and see where it leads. For now I am noticing that there is more than meets the eye at first.

" Two dimensional interfaces are necessary to define the separate identity of things in three dimensions "

I have had this inner knowing that I need to remove myself from depicting things in a 3-dimensional perspective , investigating instead the line in a 2 dimensional space...line for lines sake rather than trying to imitate form. Reading this passage made a feeling arise that was similar to a knowing the the essence of a line holds secret yet to be uncovered ..it made me smile in recognition.

" It is pleasing in appearance because the eye senses this interplay between irregularity and regularity "

This is the first quote of its kind that I have come across in this research study that specifically refers to the appearance of seemingly random patterns as " pleasing. An interesting thought arises in me as to the nature of balance .

  • Conscious one perceives irregularity when looking upon a " random" pattern
  • Subconsciously does one perceive an inherent regularity that is recognized without conscious awareness, yet somehow it is internally known ?
  • An interesting avenue to explore

  • Talking the image of " Soap bubbles" and entering into a state of open dialogue with it I am reminded of a concept called " Soul Collage" whereby cards are created of random images and the person then enters into an internal dialogue through a set of prepared questions ... pondering how I can apply this kind of technique to my research.
  • " Beauty Bare " ::: " Aesthetically Pleasing"
    description used in reference to irregular and regular patterns when viewed in combination
      ( " The Search for Structure - Cyril Stanley Smith)
    • Why that combination would be seen /felt as " aesthetically pleasing "

    • " What are aesthetics in the context of visual perception ? "

  •  Soapbubbles when formed quickly , join in groups of three - at an angle of 120 degrees
  • Noticing that 120 interests me , whereas 3, 6 and 18 seem to be predictable to a certain extent
in that I can easily sort, group and estimate their value worth visually whereas 120 seems to keep its
mystery

Sketchbook ::: The Ralire Study by Milliande Demetriou, Inquiry into the Resonant Nature of Linear Remnants when viewed through artists eyes

 - Noticing my immediate inner pull to sort the sequence into " manageable" bit sized groups and
configuration when trying to visually depict their number value. There is a def inner pull which is curious
to me as I am drawn to randomness yet when confronted with numbers immediately look for the
easiest way to group, sort, stack, and distribute evenly

Sketchbook ::: The Ralire Study by Milliande Demetriou, Inquiry into the Resonant Nature of Linear Remnants when viewed through artists eyes

- group
- sort
- stack
- sets
- order

- when looking at the the patterns formed on the walls of the ink container the principle of bubbler formation according to Euler's law can be visually felt

Sketchbook The Ralire Study by Milliande Demetriou, Inquiry into the Resonant Nature of Linear Remnants when viewed through artists eyes

- Experimenting how it feels to draw these shapes, whether there is resonance

- Noticing frustration at merely hinting and underlying structure yet no consciously able
 to explain or depict it , again a felt pull toward sorting, categorizing and definite
resistance to let it be

- there are however two distinct forces felt within ...
 that part of me which has tried to stay away from predictable
patterns and relishes the simple drawing of seemingly random pattern formations,
feeling joy and a sense of relief .... And that part which is trying to get a grip
on said number sequential based on Eulers Law

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Making bubbles , soap bubbles creates a playful yet mysterious air,
  • the more I look at these shapes the more they contain within their shape,
    formation and movement some kind of force that is waiting to be discovered ...
    structures, that follow a rule a pattern yet to all intense and purpose they appear random
    in nature ..
  • Taking bubble prints in different ways to obtain some kind of idea just how they move,
    how a breath of air changes their course and how I observe myself being drawn to one
    shaped print  more than another in response
  • experimenting with the natural flow of a 12o degree angle to see how close I can get to that geometry intuitively , letting myself wander into form and filling in in between spaces but remaining as true to 120 degrees as I can
  • I observe a playful attitude with the 120 constraint just offering focus rather than frustration
  • Using the correct 120 angle I feel a measured response and an internal struggle to " get it right" the lines flow hard and an obvious mistake stands out like a sore thumb
  • I feel a dislike of the pattern as a whole and a pleasing sensation at the appearance of the mistake, like it jumps out of formation leaving freedom from restraint
    • conversation with a friend leads to thinking about the notion of the word " saturated"
    • to pursue a project, to engage in a " BREATHSTAY" until I feel saturated , or as the celtic druids say until " I had my Fill "
      noticing one's fill, staying with an idea until it has come to a natural end , with emphasis on natural and not forced or prolonged for the sake of it, but listening internally for some kind of resonant feeling of conclusion ...before stepping into a new investigative energy
    • I am known to jump to quick over even my own set structure when I glimpse another potential puzzle piece ahead, way ahead .. and often leave the initial impulse behind, long forgotten after 3 more jumps occurred .. I am hoping that honoring the Breath Stay structure will assist me in staying until I am saturated ..and in the process explore my creative responses in a more meaningful and exhaustive way.
    • There is however also a feeling of not leaving loose ends unexplored, no loosing sight of potential fruitful glimpses that will prove to be inspirational so I have decided to keep a Glimpse Log at the bottom of each Logbook entry that I keep taking with me each day adding to it as I go along to remembered and possibly picked up at a later date
    • conversation with another artist friend  today regarding this research project lead to me pondering about the struggle to create random linear marks as humans some more .. I think I need to add that to the initial research outline as that element os quite central to my thinking . Also the idea of perception and how it is so easily influenced
    • "The struggle arises because I am unsure whether it is actually possible for humans to create truly random marks when "he/she" intends to be random . And that question then leads to the why is it so hard when in fact I am deeply drawn to those kind of marks.
      The next avenue of thought then comes that I am interested in comparing other artists resonance to certain types of marks in correlation to my own responses ...do others feel like I do ?
    • the immediacy of  markmaking that seems to escape at times when repeat patterns are thought is also an interesting point to explore , the interest to return to spontaneous, singular markmaking that carries the nature of the initial impulse rather than diluting it
    • staying with the concept of 3 adjoining lines, still intrigued that they should almost always meet at 3 , sometimes if the formation is slow to connect they can meet at 4 ... nature is wonderous
    • I wake up sit at my desk and feel like making a few of these marks, it is a peculiar feeling , free of any expectation yet constrained within 120 degrees ' ish and 3 points connecting into 1 , the restraint is somewhat freeing in and of itself giving me freedom to be within it rather than expand so large that sometimes I am unable to make a single mark for the multitude of choices seem to overwhelm me ..
    • trying these shapes on some hand-dyed cloth ..made with plants and leaving random leaf prints , another thing that appeals to my sense of spontaneous discovery
    • Last nights Bath became the starting point of immersing myself into the observation of the bubble formations, its just fascinating how they juggle for position, seem to always be moving towards the nearest set of three and moving along in groups of 3
    • when reading a friends blog about the " immersive nature" of artmaking, which seems to always result in such deep insights rather than exploring things from a photograph point of you , I am reminded how the idea of immediate markmaking, akin to plein air painting really resonates with me yet I do not often translate that into drawing or pen and ink work, more sculptural or textural assemblage type art .. This made me think of digging out an underwater camera and filling my bath with colored soap bubbles ... :-)
    • beginning to notice that I like the immediate markmaking that results in getting up in the morning, sitting down at my desk and having a bit of paper and some pen and ink to hand
    • Have not needed to go to my studio yet as all the limitations seem to work in my favour rather than the other way round
    • immersing myself into the bathbubbles felt like seeing them for the first time ..wondering whether different soaps form differently and am still in awe at the sets of 3 ..THREE ..today has been a bit of a three day
    • I have always loved the number three .. when I go to a hotel room and it has a 3 in it ..it makes me happy , if it hasn't I look for a derivative of the 3 ..like 9 that is 3 times 3 ...so I get more 3's equals I am more happy ..grin
    • I also like uneven numbers as opposed to even ones , but three has always had a special place
    • Now I am wondering : do all the linear remnants that I am drawn too have some kind of three in them?
    • Do other people relate to the same number that corresponds to similar patterns they like ?
    • is the underlying universal sacred geometry really this predictable ?
    • I feel like I opened another huge can of worms ...but slightly giddy with excitement nevertheless :-)
    •  the idea that there is an underlying harmony, a structure upon which this universe is based upon has always intrigued me, yet I dont think I have consciously explored the exact meaning of the statement for myself before
    • it is one thing to know something on an intellectual level, it is another altogether to truly know on an experiential level, to experience as if I discover it for myself for the first time, there is something to be said upon the innocent mind of a novice child
    • a set of small artworks evolved .. using the figure as a central focus, to come out of a darkness into an understanding, pondering, wondering, glimpsing without yet totally knowing , going deep within and dissolving into the answer itself .
    • keeping hold of the concept of THREE, connecting at a point, seemingly random forces forming themselves to band in sets of 3, on 3 connecting points ... there is such underlying structure to the building blocks of the universe it is awe-inspiring
     BREATHSTAY Series 1
    • using simple pen and ink drawing and painting techniques to create a random set of patterns in which to discover the figures and their narrative
    • slowing, staying open to discover rather than impose upon .. letting imagery form on top of the randomly formed background that reveals is history in the principles of sacred geometry and structural forces
    • the figures remain a symbolic observer, discoverer, ponderer ... all archetypal representations the one who remains open to hear
    These 2 series will be added to the Breathstay 1 Gallery and I will also release them into the world offered for sale in my Shop ... freeing myself to move on
      Lines, Cracks Organic Patterns - The Ralire Study Sketchbook
      • I am noticing a swing back and forth between the Breathstays discovered so far
      • an organic kind of a feel of natural progression that one step ahead is being informed by the step that came before and then a time arrives when new insights supports an earlier discovery
      • when walking through a little village earlier I discovered these markings on the wall of an old
        building , tiny, almost unnoticed unless one paid attention to a slower pace of observation
      • The splits were again centered on a THREE junction , 3 lines intersecting , splitting, connecting, creating a junction, forming movement and beginning
      • Looking closely and pondering a new question occured
      • " Do all linear remnant lines that resonate contain movement as their essence?
      • I noticed that the linear patterns I am drawn to are not " finished" as it were, their creation is on-going, a kind of movement informing part of their "design" .. road cracks will keep on cracking, wood splits will keep on splitting, paint flakes will keep on peeling off and I only capture them somewhere during part of their motion
      • Motion - Movement - Energy - Forces - Unseen Forces - Felt Forces - Resonant Forces ?
      • I am particularly interested in the joining points
      • Joining - Junctions - Connections- Meeting Points -Intersections Beginning
      • elongating the joining points ...noticing the softening of edges the flowing rhythmic force  of 3 sustained yet softened
      No:::30 Sketchbook Triangle Male Female Symbology - ralire.milliande.com December 15 2013 - The Ralire Study
      • an interesting thought occurred to me as I pondered the linear symbolic representations of common terms from ancient to present days , like how can we simplify something so that only its essence remains yet is's meaning can still be communicated
      • having introduced a figurative representation of myself onto the mix of this project I was interested to see how I would depict " human" using line only
      • a line for the body and a line each for the limbs started of the process
      • then it occurred to me that when these are connected and intersected I yet again arrive at the triangle formation ... THREE lines with a common starting/meeting point and it reminded me a little of Da Vinci's Vitruvian man in that position of extended arms and legs ... however I did not want to investigate that closer but rather stay with the thought process that were arising within me
      • So I ended up with 2 triangles at the intersecting points, much like the soap bubble formations
      • I remembered that I had encountered simple representations for the male/female aspect in the form of triangular shapes before
      THREE NUMBER SYMBOLOGY
      No:::30 Sketchbook Triangle Male Female Symbology - ralire.milliande.com December 15 2013 - The Ralire Study
      • the symbology of the triangle in its female/male aspect can be traced to way back when cave drawings depicted the sacred feminine principles according to some studies
      •  Upon researching further I came across research by  Michel Desfayes on the origin of the triangle symbology ( http://www.michel-desfayes.org/malefemalesymbols.html )
      •  he listed some of the ancient representations the female symbol originating from a representation of the pubic area and likewise the male from the phallic area , each interpreted with simple lines
      • stacked on top of each other the lines meet, suggesting a union of the female/male principle
      • many fine minds have applied themselves to an interpretation of the divine feminine, lots of theories exist , yet again this is not yet an avenue I wish to explore, but rather stay with my own intuitive creative responses at this time, limiting myself to line and its simplicity
      • as part of the transpersonal research approach an intuitive engagement with the subject matter is encouraged to arrive at potentially subconscious responses rather than already " discovered" literature research , so I let myself play for about 2 hours holding an internal dialogue in response to what the triangle shapes were "narrating" back at me
      • within the human figure the female principle triangle seem to occupy the heart center whilst the representative male triangle seem to occupy the sacral chakra area
      • overlapping, superimposing, stacking, sequencing, opposites , elongations of lines lead to a wide array of symbolic shapes that seem to read like a perpetual story of creation
      No:::30 Sketchbook Triangle Male Female Symbology - ralire.milliande.com December 15 2013 - The Ralire Study
      • the female in a " receive" position presented yet another geometric symbol which had its counterpart in the male " offering" position
      •  lines of triangles within triangles haven arisen out of arrows indicating motion seem to hold that essence for me in the symbol
      No:::30 Sketchbook Triangle Male Female Symbology - ralire.milliande.com December 15 2013 - The Ralire Study
      • after a couple of hours of investigative " line making" and geometric interplay the result lined up in sequence reads like a code that tells a story
      No:::30 Sketchbook Triangle Male Female Symbology - ralire.milliande.com December 15 2013 - The Ralire Study
      • a little further research into the triangle symbology used revealed a look at the " I Chi" interpretation , I don't know much about it and resolved to remain somewhat of the fringe of that knowledge as I don't wish to cloud my own intuitive research with too much pre-disposed knowledge
      • However I found the depictions and descriptions to be resonating a lot
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

      here a closeup excerpt

      1. " ... At first and for a long time there was only the Goddess, complete within herself and in an unformed state, represented by the downward-pointing triangle.
      2. Eventually, a spark of life burst forth within the core of the Goddess, represented by a dot at the center of the triangle.
      3. The dot grew and became a separate being, a God, still completely enveloped within the body of the Goddess, represented by a small upward-pointing triangle.
      4. The God grew until he broke through the boundaries of the Goddess and was born, represented by a medium-sized, upward-pointing triangle superimposed upon the larger downward-pointing one. At this highly significant moment of birth, the male diety was depicted as three solid lines, while the female deity was depicted as three broken lines. Walker believes this design was taken apart and its components used as trigrams and hexagrams in the I Ching. Such extreme abstraction of the original male-female symbolism would be indicative of an intensely patriarchal society, in her view.
      5. Male and female triangles, once separated, came together again in the ancient symbol of two triangles touching at their apex. The female triangle above took on the aspect of a nourishing breast, while the male triangle below received her nourishment.
      6. Next, the triangles slightly penetrate one another, representing a sense of intermingling, “like the pouring of water into water.”
      7. When the two triangles penetrate each other to the farthest boundaries, a diamond is formed, flanked by four new triangles, representing the four elements, the four directions and the four corners of the earth.
      8. Finally, the ultimate penetration is shown by the hexagram. Male and female triangles extend out beyond each other's boundaries becoming ONE in six-fold symmetry. This is the ultimate symbol for the sacred union of masculine and feminine. ... "

      • After a little break to gain some distance I am going to proceed by noting those triangle symbol combinations that resonate the most and see how I can creatively apply /interpret some of that resonance
