  • This morning I listened to the dawn chorus of the birds outside my bedroom window and instead of drawing single soundlines vertically I tried to depict the linear frequencies in a horizontal contour line without lifting the pen of the surface

  • I tried to restrict the framework to a rectangular squarish shape to give the exercise some focus
I noticed how my perceptive hearing has become acuter of sorts , like my mind is filling in the sounds with some imagery that has arising out of the practice of visual depiction

  • after the contour lines appeared I noticed that there are definite sequences of sound the birds made. I do not particulalry try and follow one bird song, nor do I try and catch them all in sequence, I simply remain open to the bird sounds that appears foremost in my consciousness, then I " replay" it in my mind for a second or 2 and the corresponding line emerges . The seqneces however seemed to have a distinct numerical value so I went on the concentrate just on the number of sounds

  • I did not distinquish between bird song length but simply the amount of " Song Syllables" perceived in each sequence of bird song . ( Hint : to find a syllable put your hand underneath your chin and try to imitate the bird song ..count the number of times your chin touches the hand to get the number ..hmm ok here a demo video ...giggles allowed )

  • Contour Bird Sound Lines

  • Sound Syllables

  • Following on from yesterdays beginnings I have taken the outline of the linear remnant vessel and began to fill it with " Melodic Bird Sound Pattern" stitches
  •  I chose a variegated hand-dyed cotton embroidery thread to add to the soft harmonious yet changing perception of the bird song

  •  Noticing that several of the numbers occur often NO 2 and NO 3 seems to be the most often represented
  • When a larger sequence is heard it has a distict " attention-seeking_ quality to it, often louder, more apparent as it distiquished itself from the shorter sounds
  • Noticing that I have no wish to investigate what kinds of birds they are, not go deeper into the actual bird calls themselves but rather stay with engaging this sound at the most primary,
immediate level like all other information gathered would be " secondhand" of sorts
  • I was wondering when language and number system first were invented/discovered as it were whether humans observed birds .. and identified them by sound patterns ... maybe tried to mark them down and eventually the patterns lines became distinguishable
  • Noticing that internally there  a sound residue within me that is now coupled with the " melodic bird pattern" and I feel like it has become a personal representative symbol in the same vein as the 120 degrees set of 3 in breathstay 1
  • It feels like I am collecting my pieces, puzzle pieces, claiming those that resonate the most, yet have also openend themselves for deeper delving rather than just casual glimpses
